Louisiana Tech at Troy Preview: First-Ever Meeting in Sun Belt Showdown

Louisiana Tech at Troy Preview 2026 Sun Belt Football

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (6-2, 4-0 SBC) will travel to Troy, Alabama, to face the Trojans of Troy (4-4, 2-2 SBC) on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium for the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Louisiana Tech Emerging as a Sun Belt Contender

Louisiana Tech has wasted little time making its presence felt in the Sun Belt Conference. After officially rejoining the league on July 1, 2026, the Bulldogs have quickly established themselves as a team to watch, entering the week riding a five-game winning streak.

Led by fifth-year head coach Sonny Cumbie, the Bulldogs have found success behind junior quarterback Blake Baker. Baker has been highly efficient through the air this season, throwing for 13 touchdowns against just one interception while ranking among the nation’s top 10 quarterbacks with a 71.1% completion percentage.

Baker was instrumental in the Bulldogs’ most recent victory, a 35-20 win over South Alabama on Oct. 31. The junior quarterback threw for three touchdowns, helping Louisiana Tech extend its winning streak to five games and remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Bulldogs’ offensive success comes from a combination of Baker’s accuracy and a productive receiving corps. Sophomore wide receiver Jalen Mickens leads the team with 618 receiving yards, while senior tight end Eli Finley adds 477 yards and five touchdowns. The duo gives Baker two reliable options in the passing game and presents a challenge for opposing secondaries.

Defensively, Louisiana Tech has been one of the more disruptive units in the conference. The Bulldogs lead the Sun Belt with 11 interceptions and 16 total takeaways, while ranking near the top of the league in sacks and tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Alonzo Jackson Jr. has been a major contributor, recording seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

However, the Bulldogs must continue to find balance offensively. Louisiana Tech averages 147 rushing yards per game, compared to nearly 242 passing yards, making its success through the air a major part of its offensive identity. The team has also had some difficulty finishing drives in the red zone, an area that could become important against a Troy defense that has been particularly effective in that situation.

Troy Seeks to Build Momentum From Statement Victory

On the other side, Troy enters Saturday’s contest coming off a dramatic 24-21 overtime victory over James Madison on Oct. 29. The Trojans overcame a 14-point halftime deficit on the road, using a dominant defensive performance to pull off the upset and snap the Dukes’ 11-game home winning streak.

Fifth-year safety Justin Powe was a key factor in the comeback, recording three interceptions and two pass breakups, including a pick-six coming out of halftime that helped shift momentum in Troy’s favor. After holding James Madison scoreless on its overtime possession, the Trojans sealed the victory with a 27-yard field goal from Hayden Wolfe.

Troy’s defensive performance was especially impressive considering the challenge of playing on the road against one of the conference’s top programs. The Trojans have shown an ability to limit opposing passing attacks, holding four opponents to 150 passing yards or fewer this season. Safety Powe and the secondary will be important pieces against a Louisiana Tech offense that has found much of its success through the air.

Offensively, Troy has taken a different approach than Louisiana Tech. The Trojans have built their identity around the running game, averaging 193.9 rushing yards per game, compared to just 176.8 passing yards. Running back Gavin Griffin leads the team with 436 yards and three touchdowns, while the offense has shown the ability to create explosive plays on the ground.

Despite its success on the ground, Troy has struggled to find consistent production through the passing game. The Trojans average just 176.8 passing yards per contest and have converted only 32.5% of their third-down opportunities. Against a Louisiana Tech defense that leads the conference in interceptions and ranks among the best in total defense, Troy will need to find ways to keep the offense moving when the running game is contained.
